India's Silent Cholesterol Crisis: 87.3% Of Indian Adults Have At Least One Abnormal Lipid Blood Level
New Delhi: Despite looking perfectly healthy, most Indians are reportedly living with high cholesterol and other unhealthy balance of fats in the blood.
According to a recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 87.3% of Indian adults have at least one abnormal lipid level. The findings have pointed out serious cardiovascular health issues, especially due to the eating habits, exercise, maintaining an appropriate body weight and avoiding tobacco.

The report has stressed the importance of early screening for cholesterol, which is essential to manage the level and hence keep the cardiovascular healthy.
Dr V Mohan, one of the authors and chairman, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai, said that a lot of dyslipidemia is driven by low HDL or high-density lipoprotein, which we call good cholesterol. Of course, Indians are genetically predisposed, but lifestyle is equally to blame.
“Our diet continues to be carbohydrate-heavy, and we know excess carbs push up triglycerides, which push down HDL. This factor alone drives up dyslipidemia in Indians by 90 per cent, we found,” he added.
