On July 1, in an alarming incident, parents of a child in Maharashtra’s Palus reported that they found a dead snake in a mid-day meal packet distributed at an Anganwadi. The incident happened in western Maharashtra’s Sangli district, and follows a series of similar food-related concerns in India. Several instances of customers finding worms, rats and other unhygienic substances are being reported in food item for the past few months.

However, the latest discovery was even more terrific, as the meal, distributed at the Anganwadi meant for children aged between six months to three years was exposed to the poisonous food. Upon the parents’ complaint, the authorities started investigating the matter, according to Anandi Bhosale, Vice-President of the State Anganwadi Workers’ Union.

Anandi Bhosale said that the godown where the meal packets are stored was sealed following the incident. The parents took a photo of the snake in the food packet and then deposed the snake. They sent the image to the Anganwadi worker. However, by the time the sevika forwarded the photo to our district sevika group, the parents had already removed the suspected dead snake, Bhosale said, adding that the issue was raised during a meeting held on July 2. It is reported that food sample from the packet has been collected and sent to a laboratory for testing.

Notably, Congress MLA Vishwajeet Kadam flagged the issue in the assembly session, signaling the alarming deterioration of the food quality. Taking to X, the MLA wrote, “A dead snake cub was found in a school in Palus taluka in the nutritional food given to pregnant mothers and six months to three-year-old children. This is a serious matter.”

Vishwajeet Kadam also asked the government to take strict action against the culprits, noting that the lives of pregnant women and children are at stake. He also shared his speech regarding the issue in his handle.
