Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan: Leafy vegetables are often considered harmless, especially compared to the non-veg items. The trust for the edibleness of the vegetables mostly undoubted if it was grown in one’s own agriculture field. However, the changing fertilizing system and the use of harmful pesticides have made even those items prone to have dangerous consequences.

In Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, a 14-year-old girl recently lost her life after eating a cabbage leaf from her own field. The cabbage had been sprayed with pesticides, allegedly causing the fatality. Without realising the pesticide presence, the girl plucked a leaf and ate it.

After having the leaf, the girl felt nauseous, went home, and informed her family of her health condition. The family immediately took her to a private hospital where she died a week later. After admitting, she underwent treatment for approximately a week, according to a report by Times of India.

After an examination, it was found that the girl’s uncle had sprayed pesticide on the cabbages, which the girl ate, causing her illness and the death. The girl’s father had registered a case on December 25, leading to a police investigation, which unearthed the incident.

Most of the pesticides used in the production of vegetables such as cabbages include phenthoate, profenofos, chlorpyrifos, acephate, and monocrotophos, among other poisonous ingredients. The pesticides are widely used in India, where insect pests alone cause 40% to 100% yield loss annually. The side effects of these products include digestive issues like nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and other health deteriorations.
