Thomas Isaac, the noted economist, politician and former Finance Minister of Kerala has shared data that showed the Kerala the best performer with Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) of 19 per one lakh live births. Taking to his X account, Isaac shared Sample Registration System (SRS) of India’s data sheet that showed the figures at which states in the country stands in case of Maternal mortality.

He said, “the remarkable decline of MMR, which hovered around 46-43 during 2014 to 2018, to 19 in 2018-20 is the outcome of successful revamping of primary health sector”.

The national average of MMR is 97. Kerala always tried to perform better than the national average. The state consistently brought down figures from 46 in 2014-2016, 42 in 2015-2017, 43 in 2016-2018 and 30 in 2017-2019.

Assam it at the top with highest number of 195 per one lakh live births. Other states with high MMR include Madhya Pradesh (173), Uttar Pradesh (167), Chhattisgarh (137), Odisha (119), Bihar (118), Rajasthan (113), Haryana (110), Punjab (105) and West Bengal (105).

Maternal Mortality ratio is calculated by the number of women who die from pregnancy-related causes while pregnant or within 42 days of pregnancy termination. This is derived as the proportion of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births reported under the Sample Registration System of India.
