The Aam Aadmi Party alleged on Friday that several of its leaders were placed under house arrest as the party announced a protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the “alleged fraud” in the Chandigarh mayor election. The detainees reportedly included AAP MLAs, councillors and other leaders.

In a post on the party’s official X handle (formerly Twitter), AAP announced the list of those who were kept on house arrest. Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohd Iqbal, Rajouri Garden MLA, Janakpuri MLA, Bijwasan MLA, Chhatarpur MLA, Krishna Nagar MLA, Laxmi Nagar Councilor, RK Puram Councilor, Badli councillor, Harinagar councillor, Motinagar councillor, Trinagar Councilor, Timarpur councillor, Seemapuri councillor are listed among the detainees.

AAP is carrying out a protest against the alleged cheating by the BJP in Chandigarh mayoral elections in which BJP won by the alleged fraud practice. In addition to the house arrest of its leaders, the AAP has alleged that the party workers and the volunteers were stopped at various places to prevent them from participating in the protest rally.

Taking to X, the AAP party supremo Arvind Kejriwal wrote that the BJP stole votes in the Chandigarh Mayor elections. “These people are a threat to the democracy of the country. If we have to take to the streets to save democracy and the country, we will take to the streets,” Kejriwal wrote.

In another post on X, Delhi minister Atishi noted heavy barricading all across Delhi. She also alleged that buses full of AAP volunteers were detained, and hundreds of para-military forces were outside the AAP office. “why is the BJP so scared of a protest on the Chandigarh mayor elections?” she asked in her post.

However, the BJP is also protesting against “corruption” in the Kejriwal government near the party office in Delhi. With the increased tension in the capital city, more police and paramilitary forces have been deployed
