Amrit Prabha Mohanta & Shekharjyoti Goswami: Two Assamese Musicians Linked To Zubeen Garg's Death

The investigation into the mysterious death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg took a dramatic turn on Thursday with the arrest of fellow singer Amritprabha Mahanta and musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami.

Both were taken into custody by the Assam Police after investigators claimed to have found fresh evidence linking them directly to events surrounding Garg’s death in Singapore.

Officials confirmed that the duo faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence.

According to police sources, Mahanta and Goswami were present with Garg during the yacht party off St John’s Island on September 19, where the singer went for a swim and never returned.

Investigators believe their presence and subsequent actions are crucial to piecing together the final hours of the popular musician. The arrests follow days of intense questioning by the Assam CID, during which discrepancies reportedly emerged in their statements, leading to suspicions that one of them may have withheld key details.

Amritprabha Mahanta, a well-known voice in the Assamese music industry, has come under particular scrutiny for filming video clips of Garg swimming in the water that later surfaced on social media.

The short, fragmented footage, widely circulated after the tragedy, captured what are now believed to be his final moments. Her decision not to immediately share the full recordings with authorities or Garg’s family has raised serious questions. Investigators have already seized her phone to examine the original files and track how the videos were released.

Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, also cast doubt on Mahanta’s role, asking why she failed to alert anyone if she was documenting the scene in real time.

Reports further suggest that Mahanta may have passed the videos to a businessman attending the same festival in Singapore, who later leaked them to the media. This allegation, now being examined by the CID, could form a key piece of the conspiracy angle being probed.

Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, meanwhile, is being interrogated about his movements on the night of September 18, just hours before Garg’s death.

Authorities are trying to determine who was present with the singer at a private gathering the evening prior and how he was taken to the yacht. Investigators maintain that his proximity to Garg during the fatal swim places him at the heart of the inquiry.

The arrests of Mahanta and Goswami bring the total number of people in custody to four, with Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta already facing charges, including murder under the new criminal code.
