Assam Floods: "Heartbreaking, Gross Mismanagement By BJP Government," Says Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi has called the severe flooding in Assam “heartbreaking,” emphasising the tragedy of lives lost, including that of 8-year-old Avinash. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and criticized the BJP government for its handling of the disaster.

According to the Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha), Assam Congress leaders provided him with grim statistics: over 60 deaths, 53,000 displaced, and 2.4 million affected. He blamed the BJP’s “double-engine government” for failing to deliver on their promise of a “flood-free Assam,” highlighting what he described as gross and grave mismanagement.

Gandhi called for a comprehensive and compassionate approach, including proper relief, rehabilitation, and compensation in the short term. He also advocated for a pan-Northeast water management authority to address long-term flood control.

“As their soldier in Parliament, I stand with the people of Assam,” Gandhi stated, urging the Central government to provide immediate support to the state.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam remains dire. An official bulletin on Sunday reported that eight more people lost their lives on Sunday, bringing this year’s death toll from floods, landslides, and storms to 78. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) noted that the latest fatalities included two deaths each from Dhubri and Nalbari, and one each from Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji, and Sivsagar.

A total of 22,74,289 people across 28 districts have been affected by the floods, with Dhubri being the worst-hit, affecting 754,791 people. The state has set up 269 relief camps, sheltering 53,689 people.

The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri. Other rivers breaching the red mark include Burhidihing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri, Kopili, Beki, Sankosh, Barak, and Kushiyara.

The situation continues to be monitored closely as authorities work to provide relief and support to the affected populations.
