Baby Born With 26 Fingers in Rajasthan, Family Says Incarnation Of Goddess
A baby girl was born with 26 fingers in Rajasthan”s Bharatpur, and family termed her an “incarnation of Dholagarh Devi, a goddess”.
The girl was born with seven fingers in each hand and six toes in each leg, reported India Today on Sunday.
The doctors have described the condition of the child as a genetic anomaly, an alteration in the nucleic acid sequence of the genome that causes an oddity. While it is normal to have 26 fingers, the condition is extremely rare.
“There is no harm of any kind in having 26 fingers but it is a genetic anomaly. The girl is absolutely healthy”, India Today quoted Dr. BS Soni. However, the baby girl”s maternal relatives considers her as an incarnation of Dholagarh devi.
The kids mother, 25-year-old Sarju Devi was 8-months pregnant when she went to labor.
“My sister has given birth to a baby who has 26 fingers and we are considering it to be the incarnation of Dholagarh Devi. We are very happy”, said Ms Devi”s brother.
The baby”s father, Gopal Bhattacharya, works in the Central Reserve Police. in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
The condition known as polydactyly or polydactylism or hyperdactyly, is an anomaly in humans and animals resulting in supernumerary fingers and/or toes. It is the opposite of oligodactyly (fewer fingers or toes).
According to certain reports, the record holder for the largest number of fingers and toes is a young Indian boy, Ackshat Saxena. Saxena was born with 34 fingers and toes – seven fingers on each hand and 10 toes on each foot.
Polydactyly occurs when there is an anomaly in the process of splitting skin and forming fingers to a baby during the pregnancy. The exact reasons are unknown, but it may be due to a genetic defect or underlying hereditary problems.
In 2016, a family in Madhya pradesh”s Bhopal drew attention for a genetic anomaly due to which at least 14 members have more than 20 fingers on hands and legs.
As Hindustan Times reports, the mother of the family has a congenital physical anomaly of supernumerary fingers. The anomaly was then replicated in her five children and eight grandchildren leading to 14 members of the family exhibiting this trait.
