Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday announced that a caste census will be conducted in the state soon. The government is pledged to fulfill the election promise which Congress made during the Assembly election campaign previous year.

“The officials concerned have been asked to take necessary action to launch the caste census,” a statement from the the Chief Minister”s Office (CMO) said.

Several opposition parties, including Congress have been demanding for a nationwide caste census. Caste Census denotes caste-wise categorisation of Indian population in the Census enumeration activity. The survey will help to gather information and statistics to the social, economic, and educational levels of all its citizens in the state. In October last year, the Nitish Kumar government released a caste-based survey report in Bihar, which prompted a survey on a similar line on a national basis.

Meanwhile, After a review meeting with the minorities, backward classes, and tribal welfare departments at the Secretariat, Chief Minister has instructed officials to make complete details of the permanent Gurukul school buildings operating in the rented buildings in the state. The Chief Minister then added that diet charges, cosmetic charges and cooking bills of Gurukul schools should be cleared without pending. The payments will be extended through the green channel.

Besides, Revanth Reddy has urged the officials to prepare budget estimates for launching “Kalyanamastu” scheme which aim to provide one tola gold in addition to financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to girls from BPL families at the time of their marriage.

He has directed officials to study the proposals for establishment of a coaching centre for backward classes for one Parliamentary constituency.

The CM has also suggested the officials set up an “integrated education hub” including SC, ST, and BC welfare residential educational institutions instead of their separate existence. It would help with better maintenance and supervision, the release said.
