Central government on Wednesday announced hike in LPG subsidy amount for Ujjwala beneficiaries. According to Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, now, the subsidy will be Rs. 300 per cylinder instead of Rs. 200. The hike applies to all beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which is popularly known as Ujjwala scheme.
Currently, the poor women who are Ujjwala users pay Rs 703 per 14.2-kg cylinder as against the market price of Rs 903. As per the revision, the amount will be Rs 603. The subsidy is credited into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries after the purchase of cylinders.
In August, Centre has cut the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 200 for all consumers. Besides, they have approved the extension of PMUY for release of 75 lakh LPG connections over three years from financial year 2023-24 to 2025-26.
PMUY is a scheme of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas began to provide LPG connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. The scheme was launched on 1st May 2016. The objective of the scheme is to make clean cooking fuels, such as LPG, and make it available to the rural and deprived households which were using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal and cow-dung cakes.
As per the scheme, an adult woman belong to following categories such as SC households, ST households, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), most Backward Classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), tea and ex-tea garden tribes, forest dwellers, SECC Households (AHL TIN), and many others are eligible beneficiaries. The LPG connection is released to the name of the women from the BPL household.
