Addressing a press conference here Today, the president of the All-India Mahila Congress, Netta D’Souza called the BJP a ‘Balatkari (rapist) Janata Party’  D’Souza along with Dolly Sharma questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani after the photographs of the rape accused inside the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) with them and other senior BJP leaders surfaced to the public domain.

The Uttar Pradesh police had arrested three persons with the charges of gang rape for allegedly sexually abusing a girl inside the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in November 2023. The arrest however came two months after the protest broke out in the institute. The opposition alleged that the BJP has been shielding the accused of the gang rape because they were the office bearers of the BJP IT cell.

D’Souza noted that the accused identified as Kunal Pandey, Abhishek Chauhan and Sakhsham Patel were active office bearers of the BJP’s IT Cell. She also showed the photographs of the accused with the Prime Minister, UP Chief Minister, Irani and others, indicating the influence of the rape accused in the government.

D’Souza further said that the reason for taking two months for the arrest of the rape accused was that they were living in Madhya Pradesh and had been actively participating in the BJP’s election campaign there. She also raised concern that given their relationship with the influencer leaders of the governing BJP, they may have destroyed the evidence.

The Mahila Congress president also pointed out that the government failed to prevent crime against women and the government is giving protection and patronage to culprits. “The women in the country are no longer feeling safe anymore,” D’Souza added, denoting the growing number of crimes against women
