After actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut demanded a reintroduction of the controversial farm laws and subsequently expressed regret over it, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued to distance itself from the Mandi MP. Jaiveer Shergill, the BJP national spokesperson, slammed Kangana for her “consistent, baseless, illogical rant.”

Shergill said that Kangana’s statements damaged the party’s good work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the welfare of Punjab.

“As a Punjabi, must say that Ms Kangana Ranaut’s consistent, baseless, illogical rant against the Farmers of Punjab & Sikh Community has a damaging impact on all the good work done/being done by PM Narendra Modi Ji for the welfare of Punjab, Punjabi & Punjabiyat,” he tweeted in an X post. The BJP spokesperson also added that PM Modi’s relationship with farmers and Punjab should not be judged based on Kangana’s “irresponsible comments.”

His remarks comes hours after the Mandi MP issued a video statement clarifying that her views on farm laws are personal and don’t represent the party’s stance on the three farm bills. The BJP MP remarked in a video that the repealed farm laws should be brought back. Soon after, party leader Gaurav Bhatia distanced the BJP from Kangana’s statements. “I want to make it clear that this statement is a personal statement of her. Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to make such a statement on behalf of BJP and it doesn’t depict BJP’s view on the farm bills. We disapprove of this statement.”

The Opposition hit back, slamming Kangana and said that the laws will never return even if PM Modi and his MPs try their best to bring them back.

Previously, the actress experienced a similar situation when the party censured her for suggesting that a “Bangladesh-like situation” could have arisen in India had the Centre not intervened firmly during the farmers’ protests.

Her recent comments emerge just days ahead of the Haryana assembly polls, a crucial moment for BJP to retain its power in the state where thousands of farmers marched to Delhi protesting against the farm laws. The Haryana assembly elections are scheduled to take place on October 5 with counting of votes set for October 8.
