Cyclone Montha: IMD Warns Of Extremely Heavy Rainfall In Coastal Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is bracing for severe weather as Cyclone Montha  advances toward its coast, with the storm projected to make landfall near Kakinada between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam on the evening of October 28, 2025.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several coastal districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the potential for widespread flooding and infrastructure disruptions.

According to the IMD, Cyclone Montha — currently classified as a severe cyclonic storm — continues to intensify over the Bay of Bengal, moving steadily toward the Andhra coast. The system is expected to pack wind speeds up to 110 km/h at the time of landfall, posing serious risks to coastal communities, agriculture, and transportation networks.

In preparation for the cyclone, the state government has activated emergency response protocols. Evacuation drives are underway in vulnerable coastal and low-lying areas, with priority given to children, senior citizens, and pregnant women. District administrations have been instructed to set up control rooms, inspect cyclone shelters, and stockpile relief materials, including food, drinking water, and medicines.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed all officials to remian on high alert and ensure the safety of residents in coastal regions. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand has also reviewed preparedness measures, urging district collectors to closely monitor water levels and coordinate with local disaster response teams.

Authorities have ordered the closure of schools and colleges in multiple districts, including Kakinada, Krishna, East Godavari, Guntur, Eluru, Bapatla, and Anakapalli, until the situation stabilises. Public transport services are expected to face delays, with officials urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel.

The IMD bulletin indicates that rainfall activity will peak between October 27 and 29, with isolated locations likely to record more than 21 cm of rain. Areas such as Yanam (Puducherry) and parts of Odisha may also experience heavy showers and strong winds. Rayalaseema and Telangana could face intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions and high waves over the Bay of Bengal. Ports and coastal authorities have suspended fishing and shipping operations until the cyclone’s passage.

Experts warn that the system may trigger sudden sea surges and inland flooding, particularly in regions near rivers, canals, and backwaters.

The IMD continues to track the cyclone’s trajectory closely, noting that its interaction with a depression over the Arabian Sea could further enhance rainfall across southern India.

Residents are urged to follow official updates, stay indoors, and avoid beaches, embankments, and riverbanks until authorities declare the region safe. As Cyclone Montha approaches, government agencies and disaster management teams remain on round-the-clock alert to minimise damage and ensure the safety of millions along the Andhra coast.
