Cyclone Tej To Transform Into ‘Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’ Before Noon Today: IMD (image-pixabay)

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Cyclone Tej which is brewing over Arabian sea is expected to transform into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) before Sunday noon.

IMD posted on X that VSCS Tej lay centered at 2330 IST of 21st Oct over SW Arabian Sea about 330 km ESE of Socotra (Yemen), 690 km SSE of Salalah (Oman), and 720 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). They have stated that it is very likely to intensify further into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm in the forenoon of 22nd October.

The cyclone is expected to not effect the country’s west coast. Maharashtra and Gujarat will be safe. In the early hours of October 25, the storm over the Arabian sea is likely to cross between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman) in the early hours of October 25.

IMD further stated that it is expected to intensify into a deep depression over the next 24 hours.

“Depression over west-central Bay of Bengal lay centred at 0230 IST of 22nd Oct about 610 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 760 km south of Digha (West Bengal), and 980 km SSW of Khepupara (Bangladesh). Likely to further intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hours,” said the national weather agency on X.

Previously, the weather ether agency predicted that a low-pressure region in the southeast and southwest Arabian sea has developed into a depression, and it is likely to transform into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday.

The cyclone is expected to continue its current course, heading north-northwest towards the shore’s adjacent regions of Oman and Yemen.
