Delhi Pollution Control Committee on Monday issued a complete ban on all kinds of firecrackers till January 1, 2025 in the territory of national capital. The ban includes manufacturing, storage and selling of firecrackers including delivery through online marketing platforms and bursting all types.

“Whereas, the Government of NCT of Delhi, has decided to impose Complete Ban on manufacturing, storage, selling (including delivery through online marketing platforms) on all kind of firecrackers and bursting thereof upto 01.01.2025 in the territory of NCT of Delhi,” the Pollution Control Committee said in the notification.

The committee further add that the ban has been imposed “keeping in view the need in public interest to curb high air pollution in Delhi.”

On September 9, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced a complete ban on all types of firecrackers, including green crackers, till new year. Besides, Minister has introduced a 21-point Winter Action Plan to fight against air pollution in the Capital, which also included the ban on firecrackers. However, he then added that the ban has not been implemented yet.

The file for the ban on the firecrackers was pending with Lieutenant-Governor’s office for taking final action.

In 2023, a significant delay was observed in the notification of the ban which was announced September 11, but official notification came forth only on October 9. Similarly, in 2022, the ban was introduced by the Delhi government on September 7, but the notification came on September 14.

In earlier times also, the Delhi government had banned firecrackers but these bans largely remained on paper since people violated them during Deepavali without exception.
