The Danish ambassador to India, Freddy Svane, is finally hanging his boots in India and is set to return to his home after 11 years of service in India.
On his return to Denmark, Svane’s friend and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to X to highlight his career achievements. “My good friend Freddy Svane is returning home after spending a total of 11 years here as Ambassador of Denmark. It is not just the length of his tenure that was unusual. Equally unique was the fact that he was accredited concurrently to Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Maldives as well,” wrote Ramesh.

Describing Svane’s appreciation of India’s challenges in the countries as “deep and profound,” the Congress leader said, “It was always an education to interact with him.”
Talking about Denmark, Ramesh praised the country for its growth and development ever since it hosted the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference in 2009. He highlighted how the nation harnesses 70 percent of its electricity from wind energy.
“And remarkably some 40 percent of its gas supply comes from biogas – something of great relevance to India,” noted Ramesh.

A veteran Danish presence in India, Svane served a five-year term as ambassador to India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Nepal from 2010 to 2015. He then became an ambassador to Japan in 2015 before returning as an envoy to New Delhi in 2019.
The Danish diplomat made headlines in May after he shared a video of garbage littered around the foreign embassies in New Delhi which went viral. Over four hours after the video went up, Svane posted another video praising the “heroes” among the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) staff for taking swift action.
