Eminent Journalist, Mainstream Weekly Editor Sumit Chakraborty Dies In Kolkata

Kolkata, West Bengal: Eminent journalist and editor of Mainstream Weekly, Sumit Chakraborty died on Saturday night at around 10.45 pm in Kolkata. He was undergoing treatment for a while due to various ailments and had shifted to Kolkata from Delhi to be with his family and friends.

Son of the eminent leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Renu Chakraborty and journalist Nikhil Chakraborty, Sumit Chakraborty, besides being a media professional, was a veteran leader of CPI and the National Federation of Indian Women, a women’s organisation affiliated with the left party.

Sumit is survived by his spouse, Dr. Gargi Chakravartty, noted academic and a leader of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), and a son.

Expressing sorrow at Sumit’s demise, D. Raja, CPI General Secretary, shared a post, conveying the party’s condolences to the journalist. “The Communist Party of India expresses its deep sorrow at the passing of eminent journalist and steadfast progressive voice, Comrade Sumit Chakravartty, in Kolkata,” it said, adding that the editor was a distinguished journalist and a committed intellectual who upheld the highest values of truth, justice, and secularism throughout his life.

The former Rajya Sabha member highlighted that Sumit carried forward the legacy of principled journalism, never compromising on editorial integrity or democratic ideals during his tenure at Mainstream Weekly. “His sharp insights and steadfast commitment to India’s progressive and democratic ethos made him a respected voice across political and journalistic circles,” the CPI leader said, underlining that the veteran journalist maintained a close association with the Communist Party of India and remained deeply engaged with the country’s progressive and democratic movement throughout his life.

“The CPI pays respectful homage to Comrade Sumit Chakravartty. “His absence will be deeply felt by all who value fearless journalism and the cause of progressive change,” Raja wrote on X, extending the party’s “heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
