A video claiming that a man and grandfather fights over a woman in the name of ‘nikah halala’ has gone viral on social media platforms. Fact checker Mohammed Zubair has now revealed that the video which is being circulated is fake and ‘does not show a real incident’.

The 2 min video clip which has gone viral showed a young and an aged man fighting over a woman. One of the netizens posted the video claiming that justice being administered in a village in Bangladesh based on Sharia law concerning Halala marriage. He wrote along with the video, “A young man got angry and gave triple talaq to his wife. Following Sharia law, he was obliged to arrange his wife’s temporary marriage (Halala) for one night with an elderly cleric of the village. After that night, when he returned the next day to take back his wife, the Maulvi refused to return her. It is seen in the video that the young man has an argument with the villagers. Justice was administered according to Sharia rules in the village, where a respected elderly maulana ruled that the young man could not get his wife back unless the maulvi who married her divorced her. Ultimately, the elderly Maulvi who conducted the Halala Nikah happily took the wife to his home.”

But this same video was recently circulated earlier this year, claiming that an elderly man who got married to grandson’s wife refuses to return her back.

The Alt news team investigation revealed the real story behind the video. This video was trimmed from a 9-minute-long video which was posted on the YouTube channel of Sharmin Shakil. The video was uploaded on November 25, 2022. The cover photo of the YouTube channel claims it to be an ’Entertainment channel’. The YouTube channel also specified that the videos posted are not of real incidents and was made for entertainment purpose. The video was later removed by the YouTube platform as it violated Community guidelines of the platform.

The YouTube channel had many such contents including siblings getting married, an 80-year-old man marrying a 13-year-old girl, a Hindu and Muslim couple facing the neighbourhood after getting married. Thus, the viral video was a part of scripted and fictional video made solely for entertainment purpose in Bangladesh.
