Family Disapproves Relationship: UP Couple Commits Suicide After Performing Wedding Ritual

A couple facing opposition from the family, after performing a wedding ritual died by suicide. The incident happened in Uttar Pradesh”s Meerut on December 24, Sunday night.

The bodies of Rakhi Chauhan (21) from Uttar Pradesh”s Budhanagar and Manish Chauhan (24) from Uttarakhand”s Haridwar, were found hanging from a tree in the Bahsuma police station area, Police reported. As per the initial investigations Rakhi and Manish were in love with each other but encountered opposition from their families, Station House Officer (SHO) Santosh Kumar said.

On Sunday night, the couple met. Manish put vermilion on her forehead, fed her sweets and then both of them died by suicide. Police reports that the couple made two loops from a single rope and hanged themselves from tree while holding each other”s hands. Vermilion and sweet boxes were found at the scene.

The post-mortem report confirmed that the suffocation due to hanging was the cause of death. The two died almost at the same time, Santhosh Kumar added. The family members cremated their bodies on Monday.

Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon in the Jani Police Station area similar incident was reported wherein a 20-year-old woman jumped into a canal with a man. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan told that though locals rescued the woman, divers are still searching for the man.

Since the woman is in critical condition, her statement has not been recorded. The police officer suggested that the couple committed suicide because family members were not happy with their relationship.
