Family Of Indian Graduate Student Killed In Seattle Police Crash Gets Rs 260 Crore Settlement
Washington: The city of Seattle has agreed to pay $29 million (around Rs 260 crore) as a settlement to the family of Indian student Jaahnavi Kandula, who was killed in a road accident involving a police officer in 2023.
Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, was pursuing a master’s degree in information systems at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus when she was struck by a speeding police vehicle while crossing a street.
According to officials, Officer Kevin Dave was driving at nearly 74 mph (119 kmph) in a 25-mph zone while responding to a drug overdose call. He had emergency lights on and was using his siren at intersections when the accident happened.

The incident led to widespread anger, especially after body camera footage revealed another officer making insensitive remarks about Kandula’s death. The comments sparked protests and calls for accountability.
King County prosecutors later decided not to file felony charges against Officer Kevin Dave, stating they could not prove criminal intent. However, he was cited for negligent driving, fined $5,000, and eventually dismissed from the police department.
Another officer involved in the controversy was also fired after his recorded comments damaged public trust in the department.

Last week, both parties filed a notice of settlement in court. Of the total $29 million compensation, around $20 million will reportedly be covered by the city’s insurance.
Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans said the settlement aims to provide some closure to the grieving family.
“Jaahnavi Kandula’s life mattered. It mattered to her family, her friends and to our community,” she said in a statement.
