Prof Dilip Mandal, a former journalist with over two decades of experience, has been appointed as Media Advisor in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, according to reports. Known for his strong advocacy of India’s OBC, SC, and ST communities, Mandal has had a prominent career in media, working with major outlets and serving as the editor of India Today Hindi Magazine. Over the years, he has published several books on media and sociology, including Chautha Khambha (Private) Limited, Media Ka Underworld, and Corporate Media: Dalal Street.
Once an ardent critic of Prime Minister Modi, the BJP, and the RSS, Prof Mandal has shifted his stance in recent years. Ahead of the 2024 general election, he began to praise the Modi government. Recently, he had criticised the government for its lateral recruitment strategy but praised the decision to introduce social justice elements into the process after the advertisement for the recruitment was withdrawn.
In his statement, Mandal noted, “The government has taken a very important decision today, which was later endorsed by the UPSC—that the experts who will be brought in through lateral entry will continue, but a part of social justice will be introduced in it. It’s a 70-year-old agenda that is now being fulfilled by PM Modi.”

pic.twitter.com/ybQXNMVqKe

Right after the report of him being appointed as the Media Advisor in an important ministry of the Narendra Modi government, many started criticising the decision. Interestingly, the criticism came from various parts of the political spectrum. Right-wing groups were furious because a former critic of Hindutva politics had been appointed to such an important position in the country, while people on the other side of the political divide began digging up his old posts and started trolling him.
