The 12-hour strike was called out by the party to protest against the police action on agitators during the protest march to Nabanna over the rape and murder of a young trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Kolkata police had to use water cannons to disperse the protestors at Santragachi in Howrah as they climbed onto and broke through police barricades and clashed with officers.
