Heavy Mumbai Rains Today: IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall, Schools & Offices Shut Across City

Mumbai continues to reel under the impact of relentless monsoon showers, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) warning of high tides and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for “very heavy to extremely heavy” rainfall across the city and suburbs.

According to the BMC, waves could rise up to 3.75 metres during the morning high tide, with another significant tide expected in the evening. Strong winds reaching 45-55 kmph are also likely to accompany the downpour. The civic body has urged citizens to avoid venturing into flooded areas and exercise caution during commuting hours.

Mumbai, Thane and Pune have been witnessing heavy rainfall for three consecutive days, leaving several localities waterlogged. Areas such as Dadar, Sion, Kurla, and Andheri reported knee-deep flooding, bringing road traffic to a crawl while many trains and flights faced delays.

In the 24-hour period ending 8 am Tuesday, the city recorded significant rainfall with the western suburbs receiving 238.2 mm, the highest August single-day total since 2020.

Schools and government offices have been closed, while private firms have been advised to allow employees to work from home to reduce travel risks.

Mumbai’s vulnerability to flooding, amplified by its coastal geography and dense urban infrastructure, has once again been exposed. Officials fear a repeat of the chaotic disruptions witnessed during past monsoon seasons, including the devastating floods of 2005.

Citizens are being urged to follow weather advisories closely and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
