Mumbai, India: The financial capital, is once again on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city and its adjoining regions today.

This comes just two days after relentless downpours left large parts of the metropolis waterlogged, disrupted suburban train services, and caused landslides in vulnerable areas.

According to IMD forecasts, light to moderate rainfall, ranging between 5 and 15 mm per hour, is expected across the city today, accompanied by overcast skies and gusty winds.

The orange alert, which signals the possibility of “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places”, has been sounded for Borivali, Thane, Kalyan, Mulund, Powai, Santa Cruz, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, and Navi Mumbai.

On Saturday, Mumbai was placed under a red alert after torrential showers lashed the city overnight. Some areas recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in under 24 hours, inundating low-lying neighbourhoods, paralysing traffic, and halting train services on both the Central and Western Railway lines.

In one tragic incident, a landslide in the Vikhroli Parksite area claimed two lives and left two others injured. While rain intensity eased on Sunday morning, the scars of the deluge remain visible, with civic authorities racing to clear clogged drains, repair damaged roads, and restore normalcy.

The weather department has also issued a series of warnings for other districts in Maharashtra. While yellow alerts were sounded for Kolhapur, Amravati, Wardha, and Nagpur on Saturday, fresh advisories have now been extended to Nashik, Khandala, Bhimshankar Reserve, Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Kolhapur, and Satara, among others. Several of these regions are expected to receive significant rainfall over the next 48 hours.

Neighbouring districts such as Thane, Raigad, and Palghar remain under orange alert, with forecasts predicting strong winds gusting up to 50–60 kmph alongside heavy showers.

What the Alerts Mean

The IMD follows a four-tier warning system:

  • Green: No action required.

  • Yellow: Be updated, as heavy rainfall is possible.

  • Orange: Be prepared, as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely.

  • Red: Take action, as extremely heavy rainfall is expected
