When Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited India during the G20 summit, no one could have predicted the sheer number of memes that would appear in the coming months. A sea of Meloni-Modi memes, portraying the two prime ministers and suggesting their “romantic connection,” went viral occasionally. Netizens even went ahead to create a ship name for the two: #Melodi.
Things went crazier when PM Meloni herself used the hashtag on a selfie featuring her and PM Modi following their meeting at the COP28 summit in Dubai. She captioned the photo, “Good friends at COP28 #Melodi.”

Following Meloni’s divorce from husband Andrea Giambruno, the memes once again emerged. Recently, the memes saw a brief resurgence after the Lok Sabha election results were out on June 4 with PM Modi returning for a third time.

Now that PM Modi is heading to the G7 outreach session in Italy’s Apulia, he will be holding bilateral talks with several world leaders, such as UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and the Italian PM herself.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi became the first political figure to react to the Melodi-Modi memes. Criticising the “poor” level of humour, Chaturvedi wrote in a post on X, “This PM Giorgia Meloni and PM Modi memes have gone too far, they are absolutely cringe and also poor reflection of the level of humour that prevails in India. Just saying.”

Following her tweet, many social media users chimed in with similar sentiments. One user wrote, “Meloni modi memes are cringe worthy & completely disrespectful towards two heads of states – that too with 26 yrs of an age gap btw them. Forget the other one, atleast be graceful with our own PM for God’s sake! Right wing needs to really grow up from stupid high school kids joke to being decent in public discourse.”

Another user found the memes to have a “very bad” taste. “They are disrespecting to both of them, who are elected heads of their respective countries. Given the age gap between the two, it is even more disgusting. Stop this BS,” they said.
I find these Modi-Meloni memes very bad in taste. They are disrespecting to both of them, who are elected heads of their respective countries. Given the age gap between the two, it is even more disgusting. Stop this BS.
