In his address on Rajya Sabha today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked Congress on the Manipur issue. His fierce response came after the grand old party on Wednesday criticised the government for not allowing Alfred Arthur, its second MP from Manipur, to speak before Modi’s address in Lok Sabha. The Opposition party also accused that it seems the prime minister is intentionally “turning his back” to the condition of Manipur.

“I want to warn all those elements who are trying to add fuel to the fire in Manipur to stop such activities. A time will come when Manipur itself will reject such people,” PM Modi said in the Parliament.

Speaking in Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister stated that the government is continuously initiating efforts to normalise the situation in Manipur. “More than 11,000 FIRs have been registered and over 500 people arrested,” he said. The instances of violence are consistently reducing in the State. The educational institutions, and other offices are open in Manipur; Central and State government are speaking with all stakeholders to “restore peace”, Prime Minister added.

Continuing further, he said, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah stayed in Manipur for many weeks. He goes to the northeastern state frequently to speak to various groups to arrive at a peaceful conclusion. Both State and Centre are worried about Manipur, he said.

Addressing the flood situation in the State, Modi stressed that Central government is extending all cooperation and today, two teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached Manipur.

Those who know history is aware that troubles in Manipur are not new. Attacking Congress, PM Modi said that under their rule Presidential Rule was imposed 10 times in the northeastern state.

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh called Prime Minister’s claim that the Manipur is returning to normal situation is “astounding”.

Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Monday in his maiden speech in the parliament launched a sharp attack against ruling BJP over Manipur violence. Academic-turned-politician, who got chance to speak close to midnight, in an emotional tone stated that he would stay quiet if Prime Minister Modi speak on the violence and say, Manipur is part of India and they care for this State, and only then he will accept what is Nationalism.

The ethnic violence in Manipur began March last year between the Meitei people  and the Kuki-Zo tribal community  where over 220 people have been killed and nearly 50,000 have been displaced. Still the northeastern state is experiencing unrest.
