If BJP Wins, Gas Price May Increase To Rs 2,000: Mamata Banerjee Warns

Addressing a gathering in Bengal’s Jhargram district, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee predicted that under BJP rule, the cost of gas cylinders could surge to an alarming Rs 1,500 to 2,000, potentially forcing common people to resort to traditional methods of cooking, such as collecting wood or fire.

Banerjee warned the public stating that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections could lead to a significant increase in the prices of cooking gas cylinders.

“If the BJP wins the elections, they may hike the price of a cooking gas cylinder to ₹ 1,500 or ₹ 2,000. Then again, we will have to go back to the old practice of collecting wood to light a fire,” she warned.

The TMC leader’s remarks comes amidst escalating tensions between the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-led state government and the BJP at the national level. Earlier, Banerjee had raised concerns over alleged attempts by the central government teams to stoke communal tensions in Bengal. “The central government has sent around 450 teams, till now, to Bengal. They are the ones who are trying to stoke communal tensions in Bengal. We have to stand united against them,” she said.

Pointing out the efforts of her government paying MGNREGA workers their due wages after they were allegedly not paid by the BJP government, Banerjee also said, “I asked one youth whether he got the money for the 100 days” work scheme. He said he got around ₹ 30,000. This was the amount that the central government had not paid people like him for the last two years. We have paid 59 lakh people their dues.”

Giving an ultimatum to the central government to complete constructing houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana by April 1, she said that if the centre fails then her government would build around 11 lakh houses from May.

Accusing the BJP of making false promises during election campaigns, Banerjee also accused the Congress and Left parties of aligning with the BJP”s agenda in West Bengal, urging voters to prioritize accountable governance over empty assurances.

However, the chief minister avoided addressing the recent arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh based on accusations of sexual assault and land grab in Sandeshkhali region. Sheikh has been suspended from the party for six years.
