A sharp-edged knock-back to the newly formed opposition bloc INDIA, CPI(M) or the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has reportedly decided to proceed against the bloc in West Bengal and Kerala.

In both of these States, CPI(M) has its major rivals as INDIA partners – Mamata Banerjee”s Trinamool in Bengal and the Congress in Kerala. The CPM-Mamata Banerjee as well as the CPM-Kerala Congress rivalry is famous and are too complicated.

As NDTV reports, CPI(M) has decided to maintain a distance from BJP and Trinamool exposing the fault lines in the opposition alliance and has decided to defeat the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

They were also absent in the INDIA coordination committee meeting last week and a seat was kept vacant in the 14-member panel. The Communist Party hasn”t decided any representative for coordination meetings of the anti-BJP front, INDIA.

These decisions were reportedly taken at the politburo meeting in Delhi over the weekend.

But on record, CPM still would work for the well-being of the alliance, since the politburo”s statement after the meeting has no mention about such intentions.

To INDIA alliance, the decision of the largest communist party in India is a huge blow, but for the later it is an election strategy to ensure no division of opposition votes.

“”The Polit Bureau decided to work for the further consolidation and expansion of INDIA bloc to strengthen the efforts to safeguard the secular democratic character of the Indian Republic, the Constitution, Democracy and People”s fundamental rights and civil liberties. This requires that the BJP must be kept away from controlling the union government and state power”, NDTV quoted the Polit Bureau statement.

The politburo, in words, also supported the party”s stand in the last three meetings of the INDIA bloc, which were held in Patna, Bengaluru and Mumbai, to organise a series of public meetings across the country and to mobilize the people to ensure the defeat of the BJP in upcoming elections, says the report.

CPI(M) still refuses to name its representative for the INDIA Coordination and Election Strategy committee after senior Congress leader Kamal Nath scrapped the INDIA rally in Bhopal.

“When we are sharing the stage, shaking hands and our hearts are also connecting”, said CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on September 13 after his meeting with NCP chief Sharad Pawar. “Consultations and meetings will keep happening. Secular forces have to work together. Discussions are happening on the same”, he added then.

“All political parties have come together to save the democratic fabric of our country…Opposition unity is already creating a huge impact and we will form the government in 2024″”, said Mr Yechury to the media after the second opposition meeting in Bengaluru on July 17.
