India Records 16 Dowry Deaths Every Day; 5,734 Incidents In 2024: National Crime Records Bureau
New Delhi: India has recorded a total of 5,734 dowry deaths in 2024, and the country reported at least 14 women are dying every day, as per the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) report.
One woman is dying every 90 minutes due to dowry-related harassment, domestic abuse, suicide and other marital cases, the report pointed out.

Over the past few days, dowry-related suicides have dominated headlines, with several cases each days from different parts of the country. deaths of Deepika Nagar and Twisha Sharma, both within days of each other in May 2026, have brought dowry-related domestic violence to the centre of public attention.
Uttar Pradesh accounted for more than a third of the national total, with 2,038 cases reported in 2024, followed by Bihar with 1,078 deaths. The two states make up over half of India’s dowry-related deaths.

While Madhya Pradesh reported 450 deaths, Rajasthan had 386 deaths and West Bengal 337 deaths are among states with the highest number of such cases. Uttarakhand noted the highest dowry crime rate in 2024 at 9.8 cases per lakh women.
