Indore Municipal Pipeline Water Contamination: Nearly 10 Killed, Over 1,000 Fall Ill

Indore, Madhya Pradesh: At least nine people lost their lives and over 1,000 fell ill after allegedly consuming contaminated water supplied through a government pipeline at a locality in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, which the Union Government has declared as India’s cleanest city for eight consecutive times.

After complaints of vomiting and diarrhea, several residents of the Bhagirathpura area have been admitted to various hospitals since December 24.

As more people report health issues, more arrangements have been made in hospitals. The death toll is also climbing, as more fatalities have been reported throughout the day. Five deaths were reported during the day on Tuesday while news of three other more deaths emerged at night, raising concerns among the locals.

The state government has announced not to charge patients for treatment as the government will bear all the medical expenses. Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav, Collector Shivam Verma, Municipal Commissioner Dilip Yadav, and CMO Dr. Madhav Hasani are closely monitoring the situation.

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced a compensation of 2 lakh rupees each for the families of the deceased. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav has ordered a detailed probe into the issue, promising strict action against those responsible.

So far, the health officials have surveyed around 2,730 houses, examined over 12,000 people. Doctors and paramedical staff conducted door-to-door checks and treatments in 15 streets of Bagirathpura. ASHA workers are distributing chlorine, zinc tablets, and ORS.

The authorities have instructed people to immediately visit health centers if symptoms appear, and have deployed ambulances and medical staff for emergencies. Night duty has also been assigned to doctors.
