A Delhi Court has granted permission to jailed AAP leader Sanjay Singh to sign papers for his Rajya Sabha re-nomination. Sanjay Singh was arrested in relation with an alleged money laundering case associated to the now-scrapped Delhi excise police case. He is currently in judicial custody in Delhi”s Tihar jail.

The Special Judge MK Nagpal in Delhi”s Rouse Avenue Court approved the application filed by the AAP leader who claimed that his present term as an MP is ending on January 27. The Returning Officer issued a notice on January 2 for the election and nominations, which need to be submitted by January 9.

Sanjay Singh”s application requested permission from the Tihar Jail Superintendent to permit him to sign the necessary papers on January 6. The court order, therefore, directed the jail superintendent to allow Sanjay Singh”s counsel to present the documents to the jail authorities and ensure that his signatures are obtained on the same.

“It is being directed that if the documents are presented by counsel for accused before jail authorities on January 6, 2024, the jail superintendent shall ensure that the signatures of the accused are permitted to be taken on said documents and he is also permitted to meet his Counsel for half-an-hour to discuss the modalities in connection with filing of the said nomination,” Times of India quotes as the court is saying in the order.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Sanjay Singh on October 4. The central investigative agency alleged that AAP leader played a crucial role in the creation and implementation of the Delhi excise police case benefitting certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. Sanjay Singh has strongly opposed ED”s claim. Earlier, senior AAP leader and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, has been arrested in the alleged excise policy scam.
