Dr Khafeel Khan expressed gratitude to Shah Rukh Khan after watching Jawan for portraying the Gorakhpur Encephalitis incident in the movie. In the action thriller, Dr Kafeel Khan assumes that he is the inspiration behind the issue portrayed in the movie and drew parallel between the film’s narrative and the real-life tragedy.

In the letter, he mentioned that, “The character portrayed by Sanya Malhotra (as Dr Eeram Khan) although not directly referencing me, encapsulated the experiences I faced”.

Sanya Malhotra played the character of doctor in the movie who is falsely blamed for the death of several kids at the hospital, while the real culprits were systemic corruption and lack of proper facilities. Despite the doctor”s efforts to procure sufficient oxygen supply for the hospital, 63 kids died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in 2017 and the Uttar Pradesh government later got Kafeel Khan jailed for negligence in his duty. It is said that he had to spend his own money to arrange oxygen cylinders in an attempt to save lives. He was acquitted of all charges in 2019. He reminded that only the culprits of the movie has got caught while in real-life, they are roaming free.

In his letter, he appreciated Shah Rukh Khan for his commitment in using cinema as a means to address critical socio-political issues. He also added that he was profoundly moved by his decision to bring this instance onto the big screen.

He also mentioned about his book titled ‘The Gorakhpur Hospital Tragedy’ which is available in six languages, provides a comprehensive first-hand account of the tragedy and its aftermath. He added he will be honoured to meet Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee and if given an opportunity he would like to express his gratitude personally.

He concluded his letter by saying, “I also want to assure you that my sanctification, devotion, and determination towards serving my countrymen would continue undeterred. Thank you once again for being a beacon of hope. I look forward to your kind reply”.

Kafeel khan had earlier tried to send the letter by post but as it remained undelivered, he decided to post it on his X handle.
