Jisha Murder Case: Supreme Court Stays Death Sentence Of Sole Convict

The Supreme Court has stayed the death sentence given to the Assam native Ameer ul-Islam who was convicted in connection with the rape and murder case of a Kerala student in 2016.

Earlier this year, the Kerala High Court confirmed the death sentence after Ameer was found guilty of committing the crime. However, a bench of Justices BR Gavai, Sanjay Karol, and KV Viswanathan has now directed to conduct a psychological evaluation of the convict.

The court has asked to submit the report within eight weeks after collecting it from the probation officers and the Superintendent of Central Prison, Viyyur, on the convicts conduct and behaviour in jail.

A team from Thrissur Government Medical College was directed to constitute a team to carry out a psychological evaluation of the convict.

As per the Live Law report, the court has allowed an expert to conduct person interviews of the convict in jail to prepare a fresh mitigation investigation report.

And further asked the Central Prison to facilitate a separate area for the interviews; no police personnel should be present within earshot of the interviews, it added.

The case will be taken up after twelve weeks.

The prosecution was convinced that Ameer-ul-Islam, a migrant worker from Assam, had barged into the victim, Jisha’s house and committed rape and murder.

The gruesome murder of the Dalit law student took place in Perumbavoor in 2016. She was found dead in her house with grievous wounds and intestines pulled out at her residence at Kuruppampady near Periyarvalley canal.

As per the police report, the victim hails from a poor family pursuing law. She was living along with her mother who works as a casual labourer.

Jisha along with her mother lived in a house built of unpolished bricks and roofed with asbestos sheet. On the day of the incident, she was waiting for her mother to return home when the intruder in a drunken state with a knife barged into the house.
