Mangaluru Mob Lynching: 3, Including Inspector, Suspended Amid Criticism Of Mistreatment

Mangaluru, Karnataka: The Karnataka government on Thursday suspended three police officials, including the Inspector of Mangaluru Rural Police Station, Shivakumar K. R., in connection with the recent mob lynching incident on the outskirts of the city. The mob lynched a 36-year-old Muslim youth, a native of Kerala’s Wayanad, on April 27 during a cricket match, reportedly after a scuffle broke out.

The victim, identified as Ashraf, died due to internal injuries from severe blows from the attackers, allegedly members of the Hindu nationalist groups. The suspensions are because of the alleged mistreatment of the case by the concerned police officials.

The suspended officers are Inspector Shivakumar K. R., Head Constable Chandra P., and Police Constable Yallalinga, all from the Mangaluru Rural Police Station. The officials were suspended based on charges of dereliction of duty.

On the day of the brutal attack, a person named Deepak informed the police via phone about the mob assault at the Kudupu grounds where a cricket match was taking place. However, despite receiving information, the Inspector and staff of the Mangaluru Rural Police Station did not inform their superiors about the mob attack.

The case was initially registered as a UDR (Unnatural Death Report), which was later reclassified as a mob lynching case, after the autopsy report. The three police personnel have been suspended for alleged gross negligence in failing. The police have so far arrested 20 individuals in connection with the crime. As per reports, the attackers were over 25 people.

On Wednesday, the Karnataka home minister had stated that his earlier remark that the accused uttered ‘Pakistan Zindabath’ was what he was told by the cop. He pointed out that it was a claim made by one of the accused to the police.
