Mimicry Row: Rahul Gandhi Criticises The Media For “Not Discussing The Disheartened MPs”

In his first response, after triggering a political controversy following the mimicry of the Trinamool Congress MP about Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Rahul Gandhi”s recording of the incident on his phone, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wondered over the continued discussion on his act of filming the mimicry,  and accused media for not discussing the disheartened MPs sitting outside following their mass suspension.

Admitting his act of filming the mimicry, Rahul said that he shot the video, and it is on his phone.

“MPs were sitting there; I shot their video. My video is on my phone. The media is showing it. Nobody has said anything. 150 (143) of our MPs have been thrown out (of the House) but there is no discussion on that in the media. There is no discussion on Adani, no discussion on Rafale, no discussion on unemployment. Our MPs are disheartened and sitting outside. But you are discussing that (mimicry),” Rahul stated.

The video of TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mimicking the Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar while Rahul Gandhi videographing it had widely been shared on social media. The MPs were protesting against their suspension following their repeated demand for an official statement from the home minister about the parliament security breach last week.

Many BJP leaders had hit out against both the TMC MP and Rahul Gandhi for their actions. The Rajya Sabha Chairman himself spoke about the incident calling it “ridiculous, shameful.”  Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also commented on the mimicry row, saying that he has been insulted for 20 years and counting and expressed his pain over the insult on Dhankhar.

Protesting against the action of Rahul Gandhi, many MPs from the ruling party held a ten-minute standing in silence to show their solidarity with Dhankhar.
