Mumbai Rains: School Holiday Announced In Navi Mumbai

Maharashtra: Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has declared a holiday for all schools within its jurisdiction on July 9 due to severe weather conditions and incessant rain in the region. Both government and private schools will remain closed as per NMMC Education Department orders.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for very heavy rainfall in Mumbai on July 8. The city has experienced severe waterlogging, leading to suspended railway and flight services since morning.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has also forecasted very heavy rains for Raigad and Ratnagiri, issuing a red alert for these districts as well. The IMD warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at multiple locations, with isolated areas experiencing extremely heavy rainfall.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advised residents to stay indoors, urging them to avoid stepping out unless necessary. “Please dial 1916, the contact number of the Main Control Room of the BMC, for help and official information if required,” BMC added.

Mumbai recorded 101.8 mm of rainfall in nine hours on Monday, significantly impacting city operations. The Colaba weather station reported this measurement from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, according to Sushma Nair, an IMD Mumbai scientist.

Inclement weather at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport led to temporary suspension of runway operations and several flight cancellations. Additionally, waterlogging at various city locations, including Dombivli station, disrupted train services, notably between Kasara and Titwala stations in Thane district.

The IMD has forecasted continued heavy rain throughout the day, with sea waves expected to reach 4.4 meters at high tide around 2 pm.
