Torrential rain in the last 24 hours in Mumbai caused waterlogging, disruptions to local train services and flight operation, and long traffic jams. Some low-lying regions of the city has recorded more than 300 mm rain from 1 am to 7 am on Monday, ANI reports.

Due to ongoing rains several parts of Maharashtra, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has been “deployed in Thane, Vasai (Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sindhudurg apart from our regular 03 teams deployment at Andheri and 01 Team at Nagpur to avert any untoward incident and give apt response in case of any flood like situation,” ANI reports as NDRF is saying.

Due to heavy rains, a holiday has been declared for the first an second-session of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Government and Private schools and colleges in Mumbai (BMC area).

Waterlogging has been reported from low-lying regions including Worli, Buntara Bhavan, in Kurla East, King’s Circle area of Mumbai, Dadar and Vidyavihar Railway Station. Thereby, the train services on Main line-Down & Up Fast line between CSMT-Thane is suspended. Central Railway reports that harbour line services are temporarily suspended due to waterlogging at Chunnabhati. Later, train services were restored at a limited speed.

Similarly, Vistara has issued advisory for travellers to the Mumbai Airport due to the onslaught of heavy rains.

The Mumbai Police has requested people to stay alert and plan their travel.

The precarious situation has posed stationing of emergency personnel and officers, along with active emergency control room at various locations in Mumbai and keep check on the developments. All Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and other systems of the corporation are active at various locations, the Hindustan Times reports.

Attacking Maharashtra government over waterlogging issue, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole said, “The mindset of the Maharashtra government was of corruption, of ending the democratic system. The people of Mumbai are suffering the consequences of that today. This is the failure of the government. Now you (Maharashtra CM) will go to the spot and do a photo session, what is the benefit of this?,” the Economic Times reports.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced all agencies to speed up relief work. Too much rain in a short duration led to the situation, he said.

To review the flood situation in Maharashtra and Mumbai resulting from heavy rains, Eknath Shinde is helming a high-level meeting at the Disaster Control Room along with Mumbai Guardian Minister MP Lodha, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Anil Patil and others.
