After Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced to lift the ban on hijab in classrooms, Muskan, a student from Mandya district expressed her gratitude for “for giving back” the students’ rights. She also stressed on the importance of hijab as a cultural and religious rights.

Muskan became a known name in India after she bravely stood up for her right to wear hijab when she was heckled by a group of men, wearing saffron shawl demanding the ban on hijab in campuses, by chanting “Allahu Akbar”. The incident happened in February 2022 after the Karnataka government banned hijab in schools and colleges.

Muskan said hijab is Muslim’s culture and right and added that there should be “no politics in education”. She said, “hijab is our religion and we need to follow it. Because of the ban on hijab, many girls were forced to remain at their homes. I did not go to college for a year. now, I am going to PES college. The others should also come out and take exams”.

After the Karnataka government imposed ban on hijab in campus in 2022, Muskan discontinued her education. She was originally set to participate in her third semester examination in April 2022, will now need to take up the semester once again to continue her ongoing education.

She thanked Chief Minster Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minster D K Shivakumar, Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan and Speaker U T Khader for restoring the right to wear hijabs. She said, “I thank them for giving back our rights. They have supported our culture. We used to study at college like brothers and sisters, it should always be like that”.

Siddaramaiah criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “sab ka saath sab ka vikas” programme as decisive and accused BJP of promoting division on the basis of clothing and caste. On December 23, he announced that he has asked for the lifting of hijab bans for students and pre-university students as clothing is a mater of individual choice. The Chief Minster also confirmed that he asked the government to reverse the ban on hijab
