As reported earlier, the Prime Minister will walk to the new Parliament House carrying a copy of the Constitution shortly after a photo session and a function in the Central Hall of the old parliament building.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) leader Shibu Soren and BJP MP Maneka Gandhi have been invited to address the special function in Central Hall of Parliament as senior-most parliamentarians.
The old building, 96-years-old, is seen inadequate for the present day as the number of the members in the house are growing and requires more modern info-tech facilities.
The new building was inaugurated on May 28, 2023 to which the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 10, 2020.
It is built over an area of 64,500 square metres by the Tata Projects Limited, and is constructed on the lines of the Central Vista buildings in a triangular format. Central Vista is a large, green area that is home to many government buildings, including the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Prime Minister’s Office.
The design was done by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design and Management Pvt Limited, and is constructed in a modern style using concrete and glass where as the old, a Gothic revival building, was made up of red sandstones.
The new parliament is highly equipped with a number of security features, such as a bulletproof glass dome and a sophisticated security system.
