Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak in Lok Sabha today at 11 AM, on the first day of the Special Session of the Parliament.

According to reports, PM will address media personalities at the Parliament complex at 10:30 am on Monday, ahead of the House proceedings that are scheduled to start on 11 am.

As the government has announced earlier, a five-day Parliament session is set to begin on Monday with a discussion on the parliament”s journey of 75 years, and will conclude on September 22. It will cover topics from Constituent Assembly till now including the achievements, experiences, memories and lessons.

Eight bills, including the controversial one on the appointment of top election commissioners are listed to be discussed.

Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman will be the first speakers in their respective houses, followed by the government side.

The sitting will shift to the new parliament building on Tuesday after a function in the central hall of the current building. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar hoisted the national flag at the new Parliament building on Sunday morning.

Before moving into the new Parliament building, there will be a photo session in old Parliament House followed by a function in Central Hall at 11am.

The announcement of the Special Session was a surprise to opposition leaders as the parties are immersed in strategy planning and campaigning for assembly polls in five states scheduled for later this year.

An all-party meeting was held on Sunday and the agenda of the special session were disclosed to the opposition by the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi.

Mr Joshi announced that there are eight bills scheduled for discussion and approval. It includes an additional bill concerning the well-being of senior citizens and three bills to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.

A bill regarding the appointment of chief election commissioner and election commissioners will also be discussed. Though the bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha earlier during the Monsoon session, they failed to pass the bill due to the protest from Opposition.

There is no official confirmation regarding the potential new legislation, but certain reports claims that few of the bill includes-The Repealing and Amending Bill, 2022, The Post Office Bill, 2023, The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023, Senior Citizens Welfare Bill, 2023 and The Constitution (SC/ST) Order, 2023.

Two rumoured topics to be discussed in the Parliament are the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill and renaming of India to ‘Bharat’.

A special midnight session was also held when India completed 50 years of Independence on 15 August 1997.
