Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding the central government to spell out the agenda of the special session of parliament, which is being held from September 18 to 22.

As the letter to PM Modi states, Congress also wants certain issues like the economic situation of the country, unemployment, price hike, Himachal floods, Adani row and Manipur violence, among others, to be discussed in the special session. There are 9 issues listed in total.

Mrs Gandhi in her letter pointed out that, the Special Session has been convened without consulting any other political parties. “None of us [parties other than those in the NDA alliance] have any idea of its agenda”, she said.

“All we have been communicated is that all five days have been allocated for Government Business”, she added.

Mrs Gandhi expressed the willingness of opposition parties to take part in the special session in belief that the session will provide them opportunities to raise issues to “public concern and importance”.

Matters should be discussed in the upcoming special session of the parliament, according to the former Congress president, include current economic situation with focus on increasing price rise of essential commodities, growing unemployment, rise in inequalities and distress of MSMEs, and commitment made by the Government of India to farmers and farmer organizations in regard to MSP and other demands raised by them.

Congress also demands for a JPC to investigate the transactions of the Adani business group in light of all revelations.

The “continued agony” of violence torn Manipur is also mentioned and requests to trace the breakdown of Constitutional machinery and social harmony in the state.

Along with Manipur, the rise in communal tension in different States of India including Haryana should be discussed in the special parliament session.

Continued occupation of Indian Territory by China and challenges to India”s sovereignty on it”s borders in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh are also concerns of Congress.

The party also urges for an immediate Caste Census and an analysis on damages that are being inflicted on Centre-State relations.

Environmental issues that are currently prevailing in the nation are also mentioned as the parliament should discuss on the impact of natural disasters caused by extreme floods in some States as well as drought in others.

“I earnestly hope that in spirit of constructive cooperation, these issues will be taken up in the forthcoming Special Session”, wrote Mrs Gandhi while concluding the letter.

The special session of the parliament, scheduled to be held from September 18-22, was called by the central government to introduce the ‘One Nation One Election’ bill. The buzz about the change in country’s name from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’ is also instigating outrageous comments widespread.

The urge to deamand the agenda of Parliament”s Special Session was raised at the end of two back-to-back meetings – a Congress internal meeting at Congress leader and MP Sonia Gandhi’s residence and an INDIA leaders’ meet at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s home.
