An old CCTV footage of an assistant sub-inspector removing uniform in front of his superiors and municipal corporation officials after he was allegedly threatened by a BJP leader has gone viral on social media. This has now stirred political tensions. However, the incident took place seven months before, on February 2, in Kotwali police station of Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh.

In the circulated video, the assistant sub-inspector, Vinod Mishra, can be seen removing his uniform after a heated exchange with Arjun Gupta, the husband of the BJP councilor Gauri Gupta, in Singrauli’s Waidhan.

After the video went viral, the Singrauli Superintendent of Police Nivedita Gupta said that the video was over eight months old and disciplinary action was taken against the personnel for his conduct.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Nivedita Gupta clarified that the matter was investigated months ago. “The ASI was reprimanded at the time, and it was found that he had some health issues and a land-related dispute with the councilor,” she said.

Earlier this year, a dispute occurred between Assistant Sub-inspector Vinod Mishra and local residents over the construction of a drain in the Kotwali police station area. After the altercation, municipal corporation officials and cops arrived at the scene to resolve the issue, and a meeting was held at the police station.

During the meeting, the BJP leader allegedly threatened Mishra that he would get his uniform removed. In response, an agitated Mishra took off his uniform shirt in front of everyone, including the town inspector and other officials.

Thus, the entire incident was captured on camera. People present were seen trying to calm Mishra down.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) has also ordered an investigation into the leaked CCTV footage after seven months and its circulation on social media.

However, the video has sparked a political storm. In a post on X, Congress criticizing the ruling BJP, wrote, “This is the misuse of power! See how a BJP councilor’s husband threatened a uniformed police officer, forcing him to remove his uniform. Law and order in the state is at its lowest point, crime is out of control, and the police are either helpless or under political pressure.”

“How will the public get justice, when the police itself has to tear its uniform!” it added.
