Only Electric Scooters And Bikes In Delhi From 2028?

The Delhi Cabinet has approved the Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2026, paving the way for a major shift towards electric mobility in the national capital.

Under the new policy, only new electric two-wheelers, including scooters and motorcycles, will be eligible for registration in Delhi from April 1, 2028. This means registrations of new petrol and CNG-powered two-wheelers will stop after that date.

The policy, which comes into effect on July 1, 2026, will remain in force until March 31, 2030.

The government has also announced an earlier deadline for auto-rickshaws. From January 1, 2027, only electric auto-rickshaws and electric N1 goods carriers will be allowed to register in Delhi.

To encourage buyers to switch to electric vehicles, the government will offer purchase incentives of up to ₹30,000 for electric two-wheelers, ₹50,000 for electric three-wheelers, and ₹1 lakh for electric N1 goods vehicles.

Additional scrappage incentives ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹1 lakh will be available for those replacing older vehicles with electric ones. The subsidies will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

As part of the policy, Delhi also plans to install more than 30,000 EV charging points across the city to support the growing number of electric vehicles.

The government said the policy is aimed at reducing air pollution, with vehicle emissions contributing nearly 23% of Delhi’s air pollution. Officials believe the new measures will speed up the adoption of clean mobility while strengthening the city’s EV infrastructure.

The Delhi EV Policy 2026 replaces the earlier policy introduced in 2020 and expands the roadmap for making electric vehicles a key part of the capital’s transport system.
