Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, November 17, that the use of artificial intelligence for making “deepfake” is problematic. PM Modi also added that he has asked the ChatGPT team to flag deepfakes and issue a warning when such videos are being shared on the internet. The Prime Minister also urged the media to raise awareness among the public about this crisis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made these statements while addressing a gathering at the BJP”s Diwali Milan programme at the party headquarters in Delhi. PM Modi deemed the deepfake issue a “big concern”. While addressing the journalists, the Prime Minister also cited an example of a deepfake video where he was portrayed as performing Garba, a traditional Gujarati dance. “I saw a video in which I was doing Garba. It seemed very real,” Business Today quoted the PM as saying. The Prime Minister also added that technology should be used responsibly during times of artificial intelligence (AI).
This comes in the wake of controversies to the deepfake videos of celebrities, which went viral recently. Bollywood actresses Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif, as well as Sachin Tendulkar’s daughter Sara Tendulkar, are also victims of deepfake technology. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and several others raised concern over the AI deepfake technology and also called for legal action.
Deepfake technology, a method for manipulating videos, images, and audio using machine learning (ML) and AI algorithms, is the biggest concern amid the growth of artificial intelligence. The central government has issued an advisory to social media platforms in connection with the deepfake technology issue. On November 7, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) asked all the social media platforms to remove AI-generated deepfake content within 24 hours of receiving the complaint.
