Amid the concerns to the deepfake technology, a morphed image of Sachin Tendulkar”s daughter Sara Tendulkar and star cricketer Shubman Gill is doing the rounds on social media. Several celebrities, including Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif, are also victims of deepfake technology.

The viral image of Sara Tendulkar hugging Shubman Gill, who is sitting on a chair, is completely fabricated. The real image of Sara Tendulkar has her brother Arjun Tendulkar in it, and cybercriminals have morphed Shubman Gill’s face over Arjun’s face. Notably, the original image of Sara Tendulkar with Arjun was posted by Sara through her official Instagram account on September 24 on the occasion of Arjun Tendulkar”s birthday.

Deepfake technology is a method for manipulating videos, images, as well as audio using machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. Recently, actress Rashmika Mandanna‘s deepfake video went viral on social media. The video shows a woman entering an elevator, and her face has been morphed into that of Rashmika’s. Rashmika Mandanna commented on her manipulated video as “extremely scary.” Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan also shared this deepfake video and called for legal action. At the same time, an edited image of Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif from her upcoming movie “Tiger 3” has also gone viral. In the morphed image, Katrina Kaif is seen in a low-cut white top, whereas in the original version, the actress is wearing a towel.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued an advisory to social media platforms in connection with the deepfake technology issue. Centre asked all the social media platforms to remove deepfake content generated through artificial intelligence (AI) within 24 hours of receiving the complaint. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar also earlier stated that the central government is committed to ensuring digital safety for all internet users.
