Powerful 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Leh, Ladakh; No Immediate Reports Of Casualties, Damages
Leh, Ladakh: A strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake has jolted India’s Ladakh region on Monday, January 19 at around 12 pm. The earthquake struck the northwestern Kashmir region, with the epicenter being Leh Ladakh region, with a depth of 171 km, according to the National Center for Seismology.
The earthquake comes a day after a separate quake of magnitude 4.1 struck Afghanistan, suggesting heightened seismic activity in the broader region. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, as per the latest update. However, the situation is being monitored the authorities have issued a caution in view of possible aftershocks.

The tremor was reported from the Leh–Ladakh region, part of the seismically active Himalayan belt. Notably, shallow earthquakes are generally considered more dangerous than deeper ones, as seismic waves have less distance to travel before reaching the surface, often resulting in stronger ground shaking and a higher potential for damage and casualties.
