The session court in Bengaluru on Wednesday granted bail to eight accused involved in the alleged murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh. The counsels for the petitioner had raised the primary ground of delay in trial to seek bail.
Film star and a friend of Gauri Lankesh, Prakash Raj, who was one among the few who had kickstarted the debate on intolerance of the killing of the journalist, expressed his disappointment over the court’s decision. In his post on X wrote, “Bail is the Rule”. Only for murders and rapists in this country… disgusting…”

Along with the post, he also shared a video in which the convicts are welcomed by a right wing group.
The court granted bail to accused Amol Kale, Rajesh D Bangera, Vasudev Suryawanshi, Rushikesh Devadekar, Parshuram Waghmore, Ganesh Miskin, Amith Ramachandra Baddi and Manohar Dundeepa Yadave.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court had recently granted bail to accused Bharat Kurane, Srikanth Pangarkar, Sujith Kumar and Sudhanva Gondhalekar vide its order dated September 4. Further, the High Court vide its order dated July 16, had granted bail to accused Amit Dighvekar, K T Naveen Kumar, and Suresh H L.
N Mohan was the first accused to be granted bail by the High Court on December 7, 2023, which the Supreme Court confirmed in August 2024.

On September 5, 2017 journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead in front of her residence in south Bengaluru. The police had arrested 18 persons in the case. Lankesh has always been known to be a critic of right-wing Hindutva. Several protests and campaigns have been launched in the past demanding that perpetrators be brought to justice.
