Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh announced the implementation of the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojna, under which women aged between 18 and 60 years will receive financial aid amounting to Rs 1,500 per month.

The announcement made by Chief Minister Sukhu on Monday was part of the poll promises made by the party during its election campaign in the hilly state. Addressing the women of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhu took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and said, “My respected mothers and sisters of Himachal Pradesh, your contribution in progressing the state is incomparable. I am making an important announcement while paying my respects to all of you. Under the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana, all the women of the state will be given Rs 1500 per month. Our government is fully committed to your respect and your rights.”

The budget for the financial year 2024-2025, which included provisions for the implementation of the scheme, was presented by CM Sukhu on February 17. Two days later, discussions on the budget were held from February 19 to 22.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government also announced a populist measure in its budget, unveiling the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, which will transfer Rs 1000 per month to every woman above 18 years of age.

However, amidst these announcements, Himachal Pradesh is undergoing a political crisis amid legislator defections, sparked by the recent Rajya Sabha elections. Nine MLAs, including six Congress rebels and three independents, voted in favour of BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan, casting doubt on the stability of the current government. Furthermore, state minister Vikramaditya Singh stepped down from his position on February 28, fueling speculations of instability within the government.

Despite CM Sukhu’s assertions about the stability of the government, Jai Ram Thakur, Leader of the Opposition, hinted at a potential change in leadership and urged BJP workers to prepare for any eventuality.
