The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged liquor scam has ignited fierce reactions from members of the INDIA alliance, with leaders condemning what they perceive as a systematic erosion of democratic values and principles.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi characterised the arrest as the actions of a “scared dictator” seeking to stifle dissent and subvert democracy. He emphasised the need for INDIA to respond resolutely to such assaults on democratic institutions.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed shock at Kejriwal”s arrest, linking it to what he described as a concerted effort to undermine Indian democracy. Tharoor raised concerns about the timing of the arrest in the midst of general elections, calling for the Supreme Court to intervene to safeguard democratic principles.

TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale questioned whether the Election Commission was informed of the ED”s plans to arrest Kejriwal, highlighting concerns about interference in the electoral process. He criticised the arrest as a manifestation of BJP”s diversionary tactics.

Meanwhile, TMC leader Mahua Moitra suggested a correlation between the release of electoral bond data and Kejriwal”s arrest, labeling it as a diversionary tactic employed by the BJP.


CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechuri condemned Kejriwal”s arrest as an act of desperation by the BJP in response to mounting public discontent. He criticized the BJP for protecting defectors while targeting opposition leaders, portraying them as champions of democracy.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan characterised Kejriwal”s arrest as a manifestation of fear by those seeking to silence opposition voices ahead of the elections, calling for collective action to resist abuse of power.


Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi accused the BJP government of resorting to political arrests to suppress opposition voices, describing it as a “murder of democracy” in India.
