Severe Heatwave Conditions Expected In West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala And Other States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions is likely to be expected in several regions of West Bengal, and some regions of Bihar and Odisha.

Isolated pockets of Jharkhand, the peninsular part of Gujarat called Saurashtra, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to experience severe heatwaves in the upcoming days. The IMD also added that states such as Maharashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala interior Karnataka and regions like Yanam and Rayalaseema are likely to undergo severe heatwave on April 30.

A red alert has been issued for the next five states for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha. With parts of India dealing with the scorching heat, government agencies have issued health advisories. Classed have also been suspended in some areas.

A senior scientist at IMD, Soma Sen Roy, stated that severe heatwave conditions are occurring especially in North Odisha along with West Bengal for several days. The current temperatures are above the normal range in eastern and peninsular India, Roy added. She also said that there will be no impact of western disturbances in eastern part of the country and so, heatwave conditions are expected to continue in the region.

Meanwhile an orange alert has been issued for north eastern states including Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura as heavy rainfall is expected on May 2. Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive isolated heavy to heavy rainfall on May 1 and May 2.
